Like so many clever flower-displaying ideas, hanging baskets were popularised by the Victorians. Their enthusiasm for conservatories led gardeners and botanists to find new ways to utilise vertical as well as horizontal space. And a suspended compost-filled basket, overflowing with bedding plants, appealed to their fondness for decoration and ingenuity. Fast-forward 160 years and hanging baskets are as popular as ever.
