| Safety for all candles
- NEVER LEAVE BURNING CANDLES UNATTENDED
- Always check the labels and warnings with the candle and candle holder
- Use a large, suitable, non-flammable holder.
- Ensure the candle is upright in the holder before lighting.
- To avoid damage to surfaces always place candle and candle holders
on a surface that will not be damaged by heat e.g. ceramic tiles or
plates. Table mats are NOT suitable.
- Do not move candles when lit or when wax is still liquid.
- Always read and follow manufacturer’s instructions supplied with candles
and candle holders. Remove all packaging before use.
- Burn out of reach of children and pets.
- Extinguish candles with a candle snuffer. Do not blow them out. Never
use water to extinguish a candle.
- Ensure candles are placed at least 10cm/4 inches apart and allow headroom
above the candle for the heat to disperse.
- Ensure candles are burned away from flammable items.
- Candles should be burned away from other sources of heat such as television
sets and away from direct sunlight.
- Candles should be burned in an area free from draughts.
- Trim wick to 1cm/ 1/2 inches before lighting and relighting. If the
candle smokes extinguish and trim the wick.
Candle holder
Mercury glass is a beautiful but delicate material. Candles should never
be allowed to burn right down in these, or indeed in any other candleholders.
Note also that all novelty candles, such as our pine cone (and artichoke
ones) tend to drip unevenly because of their irregular shape. They should
always be placed on a solid surface such as a flat china plate or ceramic
tile to avoid scorching and damage to fine surfaces. With our
mercury glass holders we include a small bag of white sand. Tip some of
the sand into the glass cups to stabilise the candle and insulate the
holder.
Novelty candles
Much of the decorativeness of novelty candles comes from their irregular
shape. However this does mean they tend to drip more copiously and more
unevenly than ordinary candles. Always place a novelty candle on something
large and fireproof such as a ceramic or china plate or a slate tile to
avoid damage to surfaces. A table mat, for instance, is not a safe option.
Use a suitable, non-flammable holder and make sure the candle is firmly
upright, not leaning to one side.
Never move a candle once lit and while the wax is liquid. And never leave
a candle unattended.
Candles add pleasure and beauty to our homes, but many fires have been
started by inattentiveness. Please be careful!
